Where it Began
"Red hot rocks as large as hills, oceans flowing with flame"
'Tum-sum-ne', Mount Mazama, Crater Lake -- It's gone by a few different names, but the history of the place remains the same. As North America's first recorded natural disaster by humans, the eruption that occurred 7,000 years ago still shapes the landscape around it today.
1888 - The Birth of a Landmark
The Original Prospect Hotel is EstablishedAlfred Howlett and his wife Elizabeth homestead 160 acres along Mill Creek and build the first "Prospect Hotel" — a simple one-room log building with a wooden floor that serves as a way station for travelers between the Rogue Valley and Fort Klamath. The hotel becomes a stagecoach stop on the Rogue River Trail to Crater Lake.
1892 - Presidential Visit
Theodore Roosevelt Stays at Prospect HotelIn what would become one of the hotel's most historically significant events, future President Theodore Roosevelt stays at the Prospect Hotel during his tour of the American West and his visit to Crater Lake. His room is still preserved today as "The Theodore Roosevelt Room" and remains one of the hotel's most requested accommodations.
1911-1912 - New Beginnings
The Modern Prospect Hotel RisesAfter a fire destroys the original structure, the current Prospect Hotel is built by Frank and Cecilia Pearson. The impressive new two-story building features 14 guest rooms, a dining room, and beautiful Victorian architecture that still stands today. The hotel is strategically positioned as the closest accommodation to the newly established Crater Lake National Park.
1930s - The Great Depression Era
Surviving Challenging TimesDuring the Great Depression, the Prospect Hotel remains open by catering to Civilian Conservation Corps workers who were developing infrastructure at Crater Lake National Park. The hotel becomes a community hub, hosting dances and social gatherings that boost morale during difficult economic times.
1960s - Modern Additions
Growing with the TimesTo accommodate the post-war tourism boom, the hotel property expands with the addition of several motel-style guest rooms in separate buildings. Despite these modern conveniences, the original historic main building is carefully preserved, maintaining its Victorian charm and architectural integrity.
1983 - National Recognition
Historic Designation AchievedThe Prospect Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and historical importance to Oregon's development. This designation helps preserve the hotel and acknowledges its role in the settlement and tourism history of Southern Oregon.
